Fleas Beware - Plan of Attack
CAPSTAR

Capstar kills adult fleas within 30 minutes and lasts 24 hours.  It can be used daily.  It is recommended to use when going anywhere that your pet may be exposed to fleas (Dog Park, friends house, beach, etc).  Give a capstar on the way home so you don't bring new fleas into your environment.  Give a capstar to your dogs and cats if you see any adult fleas to treat as soon as possible before they lay eggs.  For more information, click here.

Frontline Plus

Frontline Plus treats pets for adult fleas, flea eggs, flea larvae, flea pupae, and many species of ticks.
It kills fleas within 12 hours, and ticks within 48 hours.  Frontlines lasts for 30 days.  It is important to bathe pets with a soap-free shampoo.  For more information, click here.

Comfortis

Comfortis is a tablet given orally that kills fleas within 30 minutes and lasts for 30 days.  Comfortis is for dogs only.  It is important to give comfortis after a full meal.  Because the treatment is given orally, it does not matter what shampoo you use.  Comfortis does not treat for ticks.  For more information, click here.

Revolution

Revolution is a 5 in 1 product for cats.
It kills fleas, prevents heartworm disease, treats for ear mites, hookworms, and roundworms.  One application is applied topically every 30 days.  All cats should be given a monthly heartworm prevention - even if they are indoors only.
For more information, click here.
Advantage

Advantage is applied topically every 30 days to kill adult fleas.  It is safe for dogs and cats.  However, cats should be given a combination product for fleas and heartworm prevention.
What you should know about Heartworm Disease in Cats, Click here.
Other lines of defense:
Sentinel

Sentinel is a monthly heartworm prevention for dogs with an extra medication to help with flea populations.  Female fleas can lay eggs but the eggs will never hatch, which helps prevent a flea population from starting in your household.  You still need to use a product like Frontline or Comfortis to kill adult fleas, but Sentinel is a great additional line of defense from a flea population explosion in your homes.
We hope the above helps to clarify the different types of flea control products we recommend.  It is important to research any product you are going to use with your pets, and always call us and ask questions before applying a product or giving one orally.  Not all pets are the same.  If a pet has an underlying medical condition, it may not be safe to use any product.  Only your veterinarian would know this, so please don't hesistate to call and ask questions.

Other flea and tick treatment tips:

  • It is important to treat all the pets in the household, not just the ones that go outside.
  • The sooner you treat for fleas, the less likely they have a chance to bite or lay eggs.
  • If a dog or cat swallows an infected flea, they might get tapeworms - an intestinal parasite.
  • Flea bites can cause pets to itch and break open the skin that may lead to infection.
  • Flea Allergy Dermatitis is an allergic skin condition in dogs and cats where they can become severely itchy, break open their skin, have "hot spots", and need antibiotics as well as anti-inflammatories.  Seek veterinary care as soon as possible.
  • We DO NOT recommend any over the counter products that are pyrethrin based such as products you can purchase at the grocery stores, supercenters or feed stores.  Pyrethrins can cause neurologic signs and seizures in pets that may lead to serious health complications and emergency veterinary care with hospitalization.
